Scooters For Senior Citizens

No one plans on having mobility problems as they get older, but there comes a time when many of our beloved elders will have trouble walking. It could be because of a physical condition such as arthritis or it could be because of a mental problem with dementia, but there may be a need to have help getting around in either case.

Most commonly used mobility support is the 'walker', designed in such a way that it is not very heavy to lift up and also lends a proper holding support by the side bars, while walking. Among all the walkers, 'Rollator' is quite a popular version that has wheels, which outweighs all the typical older versions of walkers.

A majority of these types of devices come with certain features. They may have a pocket for carrying things the person needs and a seat that pulls down when the person wants to stop. The rollator has a hand brake, and both of these will usually be foldable so they can easily be folded up and taken into a car for travel.

The walkers maybe one of the best and most cost effective mobility aids today, and may be used without assistance, but they are sometimes difficult for seniors to handle. This is one of the reasons mobility scooters have recently come into use.

In the 60's the mobility scooter was invented to take care of these needs. It is electrically powered in that it takes a charge so that the person has a wide travel range. Sometimes it can go as much as twenty miles on just one charge, but even those with less capacity can go between five and ten miles after they are charged.

Even with this low range though, the scooter can commute almost everywhere an elderly person is expected to go, like a nearby grocery store, the park, and pretty much everywhere around the neighborhood.

Apparently similar to a wheelchair, this mobility scooter proves to be a safe and vital way to move around for the seniors. Wheelchairs normally are of 2 types - manual and electric. The manual ones again require a lot of strength to use; they also might require another person to push the chair. Electric wheelchairs resemble the mobility scooters and provide a sense of independence to the elderly person. But they're also at a big variance, when it comes to the cost and many other factors.

Walking for a long distance is very tough on the aged people, so getting the right mobility aid is crucial. Wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walkers dominate the current market of mobility aids and are a big hit with most of the seniors; there are a few others as well.
